Tumusiime was arrested by officers attached to the Anti-Terrorism Police unit after accompanying a delegation from the National Unity Platform (NUP) to the home of the party president, Robert Kyagulanyi.

The delegation, led by John Baptist Nambeshe, the NUP Deputy President for Eastern Uganda, had reportedly gone to check on the wellbeing of a gatekeeper at Kyagulanyi’s residence.

Party officials claim the gatekeeper was assaulted on the day Kyagulanyi’s wife was allegedly attacked and has since been unable to access medication or leave the premises.

Security personnel blocked the group from accessing the residence, leading to a standoff that lasted several hours. During the confrontation, Tumusiime was taken into custody.

NUP leaders described the arrest as heavy-handed and questioned the grounds for his detention.

He was later transferred to Kasangati Police Station, where he was formally charged with common nuisance before being granted police bond.

By press time, police had not issued a detailed statement explaining the specific actions that led to the charge.

The incident is the latest in a series of confrontations between opposition leaders and security agencies over access to Kyagulanyi’s home in Magere, which has remained under heightened security deployment in recent weeks.
